I have been a CSP member since the mid 1990’s
Liz Chalfin and I were recently trying to remember how and when we met, and neither of us could remember! At first we were conference buddies, exchanging information whenever we had the pleasure of meeting up. Eventually we got serious about our professional connection. I hosted Liz in my studio in the mid 20teens for a soft ground etching workshop, and I have enjoyed being in residence and teaching at ZMP. I was one of 6 ZPM members to travel to Andrew Baldwin’s studio in Wales for tutorials in the use of BIG ground, in 2024.
ZMP experience:
A residency at Zealand Mays printmaking is a printmaker’s dream. The residency studio is beautifully equipped, the accommodations are stellar, the staff and ZPM members are helpful, inspiring and supportive, and the studio location in central Massachusetts is lovely and culturally exciting. Every time I have worked there I have enriched my practice with new technical knowledge and the luxury of uninterrupted time in a wonderfully supportive environment.
JUROR:Frances Valesco
Biography:
She has received artist residency awards at the Guanlan Printmaking Base in Guanlan, China; ArtPrint Residence in Arenys de Munt, Spain; PLAYA Artist Fellowship in Summerlake, Oregon; Tyrone Guthrie Center in Newbliss, Ireland; and La Romita in Terni, Italy. She has also taught at the Academy of Art University, City College of San Francisco, Kala Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, and the University of California, Berkeley.
I have been a member of CSP since 1974 and served as President from 1994-96.
Frances Valesco received a BA from UCLA and an MA from California State University at Long Beach. Her work is in the collections of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC; the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the New York City Public Library; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, CA; and the Galería Nacional San José, Costa Rica.
ZMP experience:
Liz and I were both printmaking students at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), at different times. Even though we didn’t meet until later, we both agreed that it was a toxic print lab. Our passion for printmaking was dampened because the materials and techniques we learned were unhealthy. After CSULB, she had her first epiphanies about making printmaking safer and starting a green studio. After I became ill teaching oil-based screen printing, I went on to help develop water-based screen printing techniques. It was an unexpected gift of our training to take the paths we did.
In 2019, I had a wonderful residency at Zea Mays, where I learned new non-toxic image-making. It was an especially convivial time with so many exciting projects going on in the studio, which is in a beautiful setting. Conversations with Liz, Shel, and the other printmakers are exhilarating. On my last visit in 2025, the studio was still generating new techniques and unlimited support.
