108th Annual Membership Exhibit
Piedmont Center for the Arts
801 Magnolia Avenue, Piedmont, California
Exhibition Dates: November 6–November 27
Reception: November 11

The California Society of Printmakers returned to Piedmont Center for the Arts with their 108th Annual Membership Exhibition. The exhibition featured a wide range of printmaking techniques, from traditional processes to more experimental methods and three-dimensional artist books. The exhibition included the work of approximately 85 printmakers and highlights the variety of ways that artists use printmaking processes to create unique and meaningful works of art.

Some examples of the myriad of forms of printmaking on display include Oakland resident, Luz Marina Ruiz, who showed a handmade artist Tunnel Book. Within the three dimensional work, Luz incorporates linocuts embellished with watercolor and gouache on BFK paper. Toru Sugita, from Albany California, depicts the changing or transitional monuments of the Bay Area using his own photographs and sketches of his surroundings to capture these spaces and textures through screen printing. Alicia Persaud, from Santa Cruz, also creates work influenced by the environment. In her work on display she uses photo-intaglio with digital chine collé, to generate both sharp and blurred qualities layered together. She describes her process as, “depicting movement and motion of my memories both aesthetically through the imagery as well as emotionally through the physicality of the photo intaglio-process itself, highlighting how memories often blend together and change over time.” Katherine Levin Lau, of San Jose create images by hand painting on a zinc plate and then running the piece through the press many times. In Katherine’s detailed and dreamy scenes of nature the original paintings are monochromatic and then she enhances them with color layers using viscosity techniques. A final example of the breadth of techniques on view is a work from Los Angeles-based artist, Roxanne Sexauer, who utilizes a combination of printing methods including relief, mono-serigraph, stencil, and chine collé to develop rich layers of abstract images.

The above are only a small sampling of the unique works on exhibition. More than 80 additional strong and visually compelling prints were part of the 108th Annual Members’ Exhibition.

Elemental Landscapes, A CSP Invitational Exhibition at Berkeley’s ACCI Gallery
Curated by Kevin Harris

Exhibition Dates: June 1–26, 2022
Gallery Hours: 11–6 and 12–5 on Sunday
Reception: June 18, 4–6
ACCI Gallery, 1652 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, California

Elemental Landscapes is an invitational exhibition of 13 printmakers. The project was developed through a Membership Engagement Grant from the California Society of Printmakers. This grant was a way of connecting and working with the CSP membership during the pandemic of 2020–22.

I began this project by looking through CSP members’ portfolios on the CSP website. The prints selected in many ways all tell related stories, and loosely share a perspective on our natural world.

The print-work presented here can be categorized as elemental; abstracted nature with a close up gaze. Landscapes with a focus on the specific; object oriented, textural, weathered, geometric, and molecular. This collection of artwork converses across varied pieces. Shapes, textures, forms and colors, depict forests and sea. Dwellings shake, diamonds spin, spirits rise, and elements are unearthed. Our environments shape life, and the forces of nature are consequential. Each print shows an instance in a story, viewed all together, an epic tale.

Participants Include: Begitte Lynge Andersen, Macy Chadwick, Zach Clark, Kevin Harris, Karen Kunc, Danguole Rita Kuolas, Geneviéve L’Heureux, Ellen Markoff, Carrie Ann Plank, Linda Simmel, and Sylvia Solochek Walters.

Images Clockwise: Carry Ann Plank, Durchsich/Intercession 8, ; Zach Clark, from the artist book Brilliant Silence; Begitte Lynge Andersen, Temporary Village Project; Nora Akino, Turquoise Aquifer; Geneviève L’Heureux, Glow series; Karen Kunc, Endpoint
