One-Day Workshop: Painterly Prints – Soapground Etching
Date: November 3, 2024
Times: 10am–5pm
Instructor: Courtney Sennish
Location: Sata Rosa Jr. College Printmaking Studio, Santa Rosa, California
Open to all levels. Prior printmaking experience is not required.
This one day workshop, Painterly Prints: Soapground, will focus on creating copper plate etchings through the expressive process of soapground. The soapground process can yield a variety of painterly marks depending on how it is applied to the plate. You can paint, stamp or draw into this malleable material to manipulate how the copper plate will be etched.
Students will be guided through the basics of plate-making, etching, inking, wiping, and printing on an etching press.
In the morning, students will be guided through the basics of copper plate etching including soapground and aquatint processes while creating their own designs. Following a 1 hour lunch break, students will spend the afternoon portion of the class etching, inking and printing their images by hand on an etching press.
