Mary Maughelli is a painter and printmaker who has exhibited extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. She has exhibited with A.I.R. Gallery in New York since 1989 and in 2003 was in a five person exhibit there entitled, "condition:human" as well as in "Female, Feminine, Feminist" at the Orlando Gallery in Tarzana, Ca. Also in 2003, Mary Maughelli exhibited in a one person exhibit, "Recurring Themes" at Fig Tree Gallery in Fresno, CA, where she now lives. In 2004 she exhibited in another one person exhibit, "Selected Works on Paper, 1975-2004,"at Gallery 25 in Fresno. In 1998 she had a one person exhibit at the Fresno Art Museum, "Silhouette, Symbols, and Spirit," and in the same year had a retrospective of her work, "Figures and Faces: Dialogues & Reflections," at California State University Fresno, where she taught for 35 years before retitring in December, 1998. She has also exhibited regularly with the California Society of Printmakers since becoming a member in the '70s.
Mary has been involved with printmaking since she wass a student at UC Berkeley in the '50s, doing etchings. Later, she focused on lithograpy and has also done woodcuts and monotypes. Now, she is once again involved with intaglio prints.
Mary has been an artist-in-residence at numerous artists' colonies, including The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico, the Dorland Mt, Arts Colony in Temecula, CA, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, VA, and Mishkenot Sha'ananim, Jerusalem, Israel.
The prints and paintings have been concerned with images of the figure, generally female. She juxtaposes figures with symbols exploring the concept of identity in our society. |
