| About the Artist: |
I have a hybrid nature. I have spent much of my life devoted to science as a research chemist and to art as a painter and printmaker. I studied chemistry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; basic painting, drawing and design at Cooper Union Art School, New York and almost every major form of printmaking at the various art institutes in the Bay Area. I am drawn to both the precise, hard edge and technical as well as the soft, organic and sensual. My work encompasses both qualities. Organic sensual forms are rendered with hard edge linear textures to give the work a sense of precision.
As a painter I have always been drawn to the monotype print because of its painterly quality. I discovered the use of acrylic paint for making monotypes in 1995 at a workshop given by Jon Rife. The image is transferred dry from plate to support using a media mix and manual pressure. The resulting print, perched on the surface of the support has a glossy, textured and luxurious quality. In 1998 I developed a way of making editions and monoprints by combining this technique with linoleum cut printing and stencilling. My work is in both private and corporate collections and can be seen at Robert Allen Fine Arts, San Francisco, Gallery 9, Los Altos and Gallery House, Palo Alto. |
