About the Artist

About the Artist: The processes of printmaking have fascinated me since I was a child pressing inked leaves onto white paper. After having explored traditional printmaking venues such as lithography, serigraphy, etching, and wood block, I discovered the monotype process and have been working extensively with this medium for the past twelve years. Monotype is an original creative medium, offering a direct, spontaneous approach that can be enriched by a layering effect with successive runs through the press. Overlapping patterns of color emerge to create new forms. When all is going well it seems almost as if the prints create themselves, and I am the observer.

It is important for me to harmonize each work individually on its own terms. My imagery is diverse and dependent on current emotion. It's meaning and direction come from my responses to sources ranging from political to spiritual. By mirroring and refining my own experiences into an externalized visual form, I am able to appreciate the work as an authentic embodiment of my inner vision.

Monotype is a medium I can confidently employ to create painterly effects that complement the linear qualities of a graphic process. While maintaining control over techniques is important, I find the process of monotype allows for invention and discovery. My monotypes are a marriage of technical inventiveness and a spirit of experimental investigation.
