Working at Tri-City Machine Products in Peoria, Illinois and with craftsmen in print was an experience that changed the direction of my work in the most positive manner. The collaboration afforded me the opportunity to think about that very direction and draw more closely production techniques that clearly resonate a tactile and emotional sensibility. I believe that the resource for development and applied processes (large scale water jet cutting of wood) opened these avenues for exploration and much more. Ink, paper, photographic and specialty materials, and software applications combine to elicit a response that is not immediately obvious, finding kinship among materials and subject.
The work included on the gallery page illustrates the transition from digital prints with overlays of traditionally printed woodcuts toward larger scale monochromatic altered photographic images cut by hand and water jet. The most current work reflects the move toward black and white, large-scale prints on Japanese paper, distorting the photographic image to create a frenetic feeling toward the subject. The imperative is to anchor the images in both the past and present by using bold lines and shapes simply in black and white.
