Cathy DeForest is a Northwest printmaker and book artist who integrates photography, drawing, mixed media and letterpress into her book art and etchings. She has produced both one of a kind books and small editions of letterpress books. She has sold over 3,000 letterpress broadsides of her work and her artist books and printmaking have been exhibited and collected nationally. She founded two galleries in the past 10 years, one in the San Francisco and Gallery DeForest in Ashland, Oregon: www.gallerydeforest.com.
Cathy is inspired by found objects, nature and innovation. Her passion for poetry and text influences her work. Her artist books based on found objects include a series of books inspired by 1930's antique toasters as well as a book entitled "Shizen" where the pages of the book are based on the drawers of an antique Japanese chest. She has been teaching and mentoring students since 1969 and collaborates with artists of many mediums. Cathy will be teaching a book arts workshop at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy in August of 2009. |
