2024 Honorary Member
In recognition of the remarkable work as an artist, and 50-year tenure at Laney College, the CSP board of directors and I are pleased to extend a warm welcome to Charlie Chavez into our community as this year’s Honorary Member.
Charlie Chavez has exhibited an outstanding dedication to the advancement and appreciation of printmaking through the education and mentorship of countless artists within the Laney printmaking program. Chavez’ expertise and leadership have greatly impacted artists of every level throughout California, and inspired generations of creatives in this noble craft. Mentioned in his nomination and unanimously agreed upon by our committee, the contribution Charlie has made to printmaking in the San Francisco Bay Area is incalculable!
Presenter and Demo
With great pleasure, we will be joined by Rik Olson as this year’s presenter. Olson will talk about the iconic steamroller print events, share a selection of large, steamroller printed relief prints from his collection spanning 19 years, and offer a demonstration in the SCC printmaking studio.
Rik Olson is a printmaker who specializes in wood engraving, scratchboard, pen & ink, etching, linocuts and about anything that includes sharp instruments and a dab of ink.
Since the beginning of SFCB’s Roadworks Festival “Rik Olson’s iconic steamroller images have been an introduction to that magic of printing on a communal scale. Using the road as his press bed, Olson’s larger-than-life linoleum prints have publicly and dramatically demonstrated the concept of printing to the thousands of people who have attended San Francisco Center for the Book’s annual Roadworks festival.” -SFCB
